Author Guidelines

Dear author(s)

While submitting your manuscript please submit an anonymised version, and provide the editorial team with the names of at least two potential reviewers (details below).

Follow this checklist for anonymising your manuscript for double-blind peer review:

  • Do not include author names, affiliations or pictures of the authors anywhere in the manuscript and/or in any supplementary information files.
  • Do not include any names in any file names and ensure document properties are also anonymised.
  • Do not include any author names or institution information in the Acknowledgements section of your manuscript.
  • Author names and Funding information should be removed and can be re-added later in the peer review process.
  • If your submission requires an ethical statement, please do not include this on the manuscript (as it may reveal aspects of your identity). Instead please provide the ethical statement in the section provided on the submission system.
  • When referring to your own work within the paper or reference list, avoid using terminology that might reveal your identity. Avoid phrases such as 'we have previously shown (reference)'. Instead use 'as previously shown (reference)'. Please anonymise any references to your own unpublished thesis work.'.
  • At revision do not sign your author response, rebuttals, or appeals with author names.

Finally, while submitting your manuscript you should provide the names (and institutional e-mail addresses) of at least two potential reviewers in the section “Comments for the Editor”.

You must not communicate with your potential reviewers, nor should you suggest reviewers who are colleagues, or who have co-authored or collaborated with you during the last three years. Editors do not invite reviewers who have potential competing interests with the authors.

Further, in order to provide a broad and balanced assessment of the work, and ensure scientific rigor, please suggest diverse candidate reviewers who are located in different countries/regions from the author group. Also consider other diversity attributes e.g. gender, race and ethnicity, career stage, etc. Finally, you should not include existing members of the journal's editorial team, of whom the journal are already aware.
