Cut by the horror of wars, the European twentieth century witnessed significant changes in gender belonging and women's voices, both in the elaboration of thought and in life practices. This essay aims to investigate the connections between these two central aspects of the contemporary era, starting from the emotional traces of traumatic memories, a point of intersection between historical and personal experiences. In particular, the present study focuses on the analysis of women's “memory writing” (diaries, choral interviews, chronicle notes) related to war events, in the texts written by Zinaida Gippius, Svetlana Alexievich, Ludmila Ulitskaya, Anna Politkovskaya. The effort of these extraordinary women to inscribe themselves in the act of storytelling has shaped an “uncertain” literary word, that encompasses minute details and embraces the nonlinear sense of time and memory processes. A word that, by containing the emotions, stories and experiences of the writer (and reader), manages to acknowledge the complexity of human beings, their existences and the powers that violate them.

Tagliato dall'orrore delle guerre, il Novecento europeo ha visto cambiamenti significativi nell'appartenenza di genere e nella voce delle donne, sia nella elaborazione del pensiero, che nelle pratiche di vita. Il presente saggio si propone di indagare le connessioni tra questi due aspetti centrali dell'epoca contemporanea, partendo dalle tracce emotive delle memorie traumatiche, punto di intersezione tra esperienze storiche e personali. In particolare, il presente studio si concentra sull'analisi della “scrittura di memoria” al femminile (diari, interviste corali, note di cronaca) legata agli eventi bellici, nei testi composti da Zinaida Gippius, Svetlana Aleksievič, Ljudmila Ulickaja e Anna Politkovskaya. Lo sforzo di queste donne straordinarie di iscrivere se stesse nell'atto di narrare ha dato forma a una parola letteraria “incerta”, che comprende dettagli minimi e abbraccia il senso non lineare del tempo e dei processi di memoria. Una parola che, contenendo le emozioni, le storie e le esperienze di chi scrive (e di chi legge), riesce a riconoscere la complessità degli esseri umani, delle loro esistenze e dei poteri che le violano.
