Abstract

In the prevailing debate on the determinants of military conflicts, there seems to be a lack of inquiry into the possible ‘material’ causes among the factors fueling today's winds of war. In particular, there is a need to assess how much imbalances in trade and financial relations, trends toward centralization of capital, and related turns in the global economic order from free trade to protectionism matter. A dialogue between Honorary Governor of the Bank of Italy Ignazio Visco and economist Emiliano Brancaccio, initiator of the call on “economic conditions for peace”.
