Abstract

The contribution addresses the relations between journalism, activism, and gender. Based on an in-depth interview to Barbara Bonomi Romagnoli, journalist, activist, and researcher, the contribution reflects on women journalists’ professional trajectories and on the persisting role of “glass ceilings” in Italian newsrooms; on the role of activism for gender equality in the media system; on the goals that have been reached in recent years (from inclusive language to more equal representations of gender-sensitive topics).

Francesca Comunello, Sapienza, Università di Roma

Francesca Comunello è professoressa ordinaria di Sociologia dei processi culturali e comunicativi presso il Dipartimento di Comunicazione e Ricerca Sociale della Sapienza, Università di Roma, dove insegna Internet e social media studies. La sua ricerca si concentra sulle intersezioni tra ambienti digitali e pratiche sociali (genere e piattaforme digitali; social media e comunicazione d’emergenza; comunicazione digitale, generazioni e ageism). I suoi lavori sono pubblicati su riviste quali (selezione) New Media & Society, Information Communication & Society, Media Culture and Society, The Sociological Review, Ageing and Society, Violence Against Women.

Carla Rita Nisi, Sapienza, Università di Roma

Carla Rita Nisi ha conseguito la laurea magistrale in “Media, Comunicazione digitale e Giornalismo” presso il Dipartimento di Comunicazione e Ricerca Sociale della Sapienza, Università di Roma. Ha partecipato alla conferenza International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) nel 2020, con Francesca Comunello e Simone Mulargia, presentando il paper “Mirror mirror on the wall…” Ambivalent attitudes in Italian Instagram users’ narrations addressing female beauty, photo-editing, and the role of influencers
