Ageing Eastwood Between Films and Media

Abstract

This article aims at analysing the last years of Clint Eastwood's artistic production and, at the same time, the physical ageing processes of the film star, as witnessed by images and photos that circulated on the Internet between his 93rd and 94th birthdays. Thanks to this case study, it is possible to identify more clearly some aspects hidden by media clamor: the ambivalent relationship between on-screen and off-screen; the differences that are now imposed between the third and fourth age in storytelling and media representation; the negotiation of Eastwood's masculinity and his role as a male star; the clear difference between the artistic longevity of film directors depending on whether they are men or women.

Author Biography

Roy Menarini, Università di Bologna

Roy Menarini is Full Professor of Pemm/01-B at the University of Bologna, where he teaches Cinema and Cultural Industry and various other courses. He is senior editor of the academic journal Cinergie – Il cinema e le altre arti (and directs the series of the same name for Mimesis) and director of the academic journal Zone Moda Journal, both of which are ANVUR A-level subjects in some areas. He is Principal Investigator of the PRIN 2022 PNRR Celebr-age and Unit Manager of the PRIN 2022 Reframing Film Festivals. He has written numerous books on contemporary cinema, film criticism, cinephilia, film analysis and the poetics of authors. He collaborates with various institutions and is on the scientific committee of many magazines and series. He is a consultant for the Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna and coordinator of media education courses in the context of the ministerial project “Cinema and Images for the School”.
